Backstage – Code of Conduct

Taking part in any Hutton Rudby Dramatic Society production should be rewarding and enjoyable for all. However we do have some important rules that we like everyone to follow at all times. We call these our “Code of Conduct”

At all times

  • Enjoy yourself – but allow others to do so as well by being well behaved, paying attention and being as quiet as possible. Unacceptable behaviour by Junior members will be dealt with using the procedure below.
  • Come early so that you are ready to start rehearsals/performances on time.
  • Let the production team know if you are unable to attend a rehearsal.
  • Listen carefully to directions and follow them.
  • If you have an idea, speak to the director(s) privately. Calling out during a rehearsal does not help.
  • Learn your words, dances and movements as soon as you can.
  • You MUST attend all dress rehearsals and all performances.

During the show:

  • Family and friends are not allowed back stage or in the dressing rooms.
  • You are not allowed into the hall or to meet the audience whilst in costume, even after the show has finished.
  • Do not touch or move stage curtains or props. Try to walk between the stage legs without touching them when entering or leaving the stage. NEVER peep around the front curtain.
  • All noise from the wings can be heard by the audience, so be quiet when entering and leaving the stage. When in the wings, keep well back behind the lines on the floor. Do not get in the way of the backstage crew as they have limited time and space to move scenery.
  • Wear the costumes you have been given to wear and keep them clean and neat at all times. Always wear a dressing gown over your costume when not on stage, especially when eating. If there is a problem with any of your costumes, talk to the Wardrobe Team as soon as possible.
  • Look after any props you use and report any damage so it can be repaired quickly.
  • Stay in the dressing room when not on stage, but be ready to make your entrances on time. Once on stage remember you can be seen by the audience ALL the time, and someone will always be watching YOU. Keep in character, speak out, sing loudly and remember to smile!

Junior Members Conduct Procedure

All Junior members are expected to adhere to the ‘Code of Conduct’. In the event of unacceptable behaviour a yellow, orange and red card system will be adopted in close consultation with parents or carers. A confidential, temporary record will be kept of this during the period of rehearsals.

YELLOW

The Junior member will be made aware that their behaviour is unacceptable and a parent or carer will be contacted.

ORANGE

If unacceptable behaviour continues the Junior member will be made aware of this and the production team will consult with the parent(s) or carer(s) and ask that they (or a representative nominated by the parent or carer) is present at rehearsals or, if the problem happens during a performance, a parent or carer (or nominated representative) will be asked to be present in the dressing rooms.

RED

If the behaviour problem cannot be resolved in this way then the Junior member will not be allowed to continue in the production.

We have rarely had to use this procedure and hope we will have no cause to do so during any of our productions. The clear guidelines in the ‘Code of Conduct’ should ensure this.
