An active theatre group has existed in the village since 1920. Initially, performances took place in the original schoolhouse but since 1928, when the village hall was completed, there has been an uninterrupted programme of productions, with the exception of the war years, until the present day. During the Covid-19 pandemic, our productions moved online and these can be viewed on our YouTube channel.
We meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Hutton Rudby Village Hall where we have a well-proportioned stage with modern sound, lighting and projection equipment, an extensive wardrobe department and on-site facilities for scenery construction.
A typical year starts with the annual pantomime in January, a spring play, often a murder mystery play in the summer if time permits, and either a children’s production or revue in the autumn.
We are always looking forward to welcoming new members and with such an active programme there are plenty of opportunities to develop your particular interests whatever direction they might lie in.
Get involved
We are always looking forward to welcoming new members. Whether your interests lie in performing or in supporting our activities in one of the numerous backstage or technical roles that contribute to the success of our productions.
We are keen to encourage new people to experience the excitement of taking part in live productions. No audition is required for aspiring performers – just enthusiasm and a willingness to participate. There will always be the opportunity to appear on stage. Younger members above Year 6 have the opportunity to appear in the annual pantomime and biennial junior production.
Membership
There is an annual membership fee of £20, which is managed by our membership secretary Susan Henderson. This contributes towards the cost of refreshments which are served during the mid-session break on rehearsal nights. Costumes and makeup are provided, but there is often a request to provide your own suitable footwear.
If you are interested in getting involved with Hutton Rudby Dramatic Society you can drop by on any Tuesday or Thursday evening between 8.00 pm and 10.00 pm for a chat with our current members. Our social media accounts are regularly updated with news of what we are doing.
